Quinta-feira, dia vinte e cinco de Agosto

Boa tarde! Em vez de puré de batata, pode ser batatas fritas? What do I want to know? a)if they serve chips and mash b) if I can have chips instead of mash c) if I can have mash instead of chips
Novo tema amanha… what shall it be? the weather, or the post office and bank? You decide, the one that has the most comments for it I’ll do for the next week.

Terça-feira, dia vinte e três de Agosto

Bom dia! Os senhores, vão desejar café? What’s the waiter asking? a) If the men want coffee b) if you all want coffee c) if the lords want coffee
Tip: vão desejar=are going to want vão comes from ir-to go (vou, vais vai, vamos, vão, =I go, you(tu) goes, he/she/you(você) go, we go, they go) To say I’m going to have, you’re going to eat etc. put the correct form of the verb ‘ir’ followed by the verb e.g. vou ter, você vai comer, vamos comer etc.

Segunda-feira, dia vinte e dois de Agosto

Bom dia! Here’s a question I don’t know the answer to… It depends where you are I guess. Quanto se deve deixar de gorjeta?
Tip: verb+se is often used as an impersonal way of saying you – like ‘one’ (put the se first with negatives or question words) Quanto se deve=how much should one .. Come se muito bacalhau em Portugal =One eats a lot of cod in Portugal, Nao se come a ementa = one doesn’t eat the menu

Sexta-feira, dia dezanove de Agosto

Boa tarde! Novo tema hoje – at the restaurant. Which of these things would you not eat? sopa, entrada, ementa, sobremesa
Tip: To say -don’t eat, doesn’t have, isn’t, can’t go etc (i.e. making a verb, action, negative) you simply put ‘nao’ in front of the action -nao come, nao tem, nao está, nao pode ir. There are various ways to do this in English, but only one way in Portuguese.
