Tip: Have you heard of the ‘acordo ortográfico’? This is the new spelling/ punctuation rules for Portuguese. One of the new rules realtes to hypens. Fim de semana used to have hypens, but now it doesn’t because of the ‘de’ in the middle!

Tip: In reflexive verbs for the nós form, take off the final -s of the verb. This facilitates pronunciation (but complicates spelling you might say, but there we go, that’s how it is!!)

Tip: Don’t know the word for something… describe it! É uma coisa para… (it’s something for…) É uma coisa para abrir garrafas de vinho, É uma coisa para abrir a porta com a mão What are these things? Can you understand even if you don’t know the word in Portuguese? The person you are talking to will also understand if you explain like this :)
